YouTube thumbnail downloader — questions answered

Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?+

YouTube thumbnails are generally copyrighted by the video creator. Downloading for personal reference, research, or commentary is usually acceptable under fair use. Reusing someone else's thumbnail commercially or without permission can infringe their copyright. Always credit the creator and seek permission for commercial use.

Why is the maxresdefault not available for some videos?+

YouTube only generates a 1280×720 maxresdefault thumbnail for videos uploaded in HD (720p or higher). Older videos, or videos uploaded in standard definition, only have the hqdefault (480×360) variant. In that case, the downloader automatically shows hqdefault as the highest available resolution.

Does this downloader work for YouTube Shorts?+

Yes. Paste the /shorts/ URL and the downloader extracts the video ID and fetches the thumbnail exactly the same way.

Can I use the downloaded thumbnail as my own?+

You can use downloaded thumbnails for reference and inspiration, but you cannot claim them as your own original work. If you want a completely original thumbnail, use the AI Thumbnail Generator to create one from scratch.
