How does your thumbnail score on best practices?

What does the YouTube thumbnail checker audit?

The checker runs eight criteria derived from YouTube's official requirements and proven CTR best practices. Each check is weighted equally in the final score.

#CheckPass conditionWhy it matters
0116:9 aspect ratioRatio between 1.60:1 and 1.85:1Non-16:9 thumbnails are letterboxed or cropped in the YouTube player.
02Resolution ≥ 1280×720 pxMinimum 1280 wide, 720 tallBelow 1280×720 looks blurry on Retina screens and large monitors.
03File size under 2 MBWarning if above 500 KBYouTube hard-rejects thumbnails over 2 MB at upload.
04High contrast rangeLuminance range ≥ 80 out of 255At 168 px (Search size) low-contrast text becomes unreadable.
05Landscape orientationWidth must exceed heightPortrait/square thumbnails are letterboxed in the 16:9 video player.
06Above minimum dimensionsAt least 400×225 pxVery small images may be rejected or rendered as a blurry placeholder.
07Text or high-detail contentHigh-frequency variation in centre zoneThumbnails with bold text consistently outperform plain image thumbnails in CTR tests.
08No critical content near edgesTop-corner brightness heuristicYouTube overlays duration, progress bar, and channel badges near the edges.

What do the thumbnail checker grades mean?

The checker scores your thumbnail out of 100 and assigns a grade. Warnings count as half a pass.

A
Grade A (88–100) — All or nearly all checks passYour thumbnail meets all YouTube technical requirements and best-practice criteria. Focus now on design quality, hook strength, and A/B testing.
B
Grade B (70–87) — One or two issues to fixMinor technical issues exist. Fix the flagged items (usually contrast or text presence) and re-check. This is a common result for first-pass thumbnails.
C
Grade C (50–69) — Several issues detectedMultiple best-practice criteria failed. Prioritise aspect ratio, resolution, and contrast failures — these have the highest impact on CTR.
D
Grade D (0–49) — Significant problemsFundamental issues detected. The thumbnail may be rejected by YouTube on upload (size/dimension) or render badly in search results (contrast/orientation).

YouTube thumbnail checker — questions answered

Is this thumbnail checker free?+

Yes — completely free. No account required, no watermarks. The checker runs in your browser and your image is never sent to a server.

Does a perfect checker score guarantee a high CTR?+

The checker audits technical and structural quality. It cannot evaluate design aesthetics, emotional hook, niche relevance, title synergy, or audience alignment — which often drive more CTR than technical specs. Use this alongside the Thumbnail Tester to preview how your design looks at YouTube Search size.

Why does the text check sometimes fail on thumbnails that have text?+

The text check uses a luminance-variance heuristic on the centre zone of your image. It may fail on thumbnails with very large plain areas (solid-colour backgrounds with small text) or on text that is the same colour as the background. The check is an indicator, not a definitive detector.

What is the YouTube thumbnail safe zone?+

The safe zone is the centre 80% of the thumbnail frame — roughly 100 px from each edge at 1280×720. YouTube overlays the video duration badge in the bottom-right, a progress bar along the bottom, and sometimes a channel badge at the top. Keeping critical text and faces within the safe zone prevents these overlays from obscuring your content.
