Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about CTRpilot — how the AI thumbnail generator works, what credits are, how we measure CTR improvement, and what the free tools do.
What is CTRpilot?
CTRpilot is an AI-powered YouTube thumbnail generator. You enter your video title, the AI generates up to 4 high-CTR thumbnail variants in about 8 seconds, and you pick the one to publish. It also includes free tools for testing, checking, and rating thumbnails you've already made.
Is CTRpilot free to use?
Yes — you get 5 free credits when you create an account, enough for one free thumbnail. No credit card required to start. Each thumbnail costs 5 credits. Check the pricing page for pack details.
What do I need to get started?
Just a Google account to sign in and a YouTube video title to generate from. You don't need design experience, a Canva subscription, or any creative assets. The AI handles layout, colour, expression, and text.
How is CTRpilot different from Canva?
Canva gives you design tools and templates — you still have to make the design decisions. CTRpilot makes them for you: it generates up to four finished thumbnail variants from one line of text, with layout, contrast, and hook placement already applied. See the full comparison at /compare/vs-canva.
How does the AI generate thumbnails?
CTRpilot reads your video title to infer the niche, emotional tone, and content type, then builds an image prompt that encodes its composition rules — face position, expression intensity, colour contrast, text weight, and hook placement. That prompt produces up to 4 distinct variants (1–4, your choice, on a paid account), each taking a different design approach so you can compare and choose.
What is a 'credit'?
Credits are CTRpilot's usage unit. Each generated thumbnail costs 5 credits, so a set of 4 variants costs 20. You start with 5 free credits — one free thumbnail. Credits never expire.
How many variants does one generation produce?
On a paid account, you choose 1–4 thumbnail variants per generation at 5 credits each (the free generation on a new account produces 1). They use different colour palettes, layouts, and expression styles so you can compare meaningfully. You download whichever you prefer.
Can I customise the generated thumbnails?
Yes. Generated thumbnails can be downloaded as high-resolution PNG files and edited further in Canva, Photoshop, or any image editor. Most creators use CTRpilot's output as a strong starting point and make minor adjustments — swapping in their actual photo, tweaking font size, adjusting the hook text.
What resolution are the generated thumbnails?
Generated thumbnails are 1280×720px — the YouTube-recommended resolution at 16:9 aspect ratio. Files are under 2 MB and compatible with YouTube's upload requirements.
What is CTR and why does it matter?
CTR (click-through rate) is the percentage of people who click your thumbnail after seeing it. If 1,000 people see your thumbnail and 60 click it, your CTR is 6%. CTR is one of YouTube's primary signals for distribution — a higher CTR means YouTube shows your video to more people from the same number of initial impressions.
What is a good CTR on YouTube?
Average YouTube CTR ranges from 2–10% depending on niche, channel size, and traffic source. Most channels aim for 4–6% as a healthy baseline, with top performers reaching 8–12% in some niches. See our full benchmark data at /blog/youtube-ctr-benchmarks-2026.
Does CTRpilot guarantee a CTR improvement?
No, and be sceptical of any thumbnail tool that does. CTRpilot does not connect to your YouTube channel and does not measure your CTR, so we have no outcome data to quote. What the generator does is apply composition rules that correlate with strong thumbnails — one focal subject, short hook text, high contrast, legibility at 168px. Whether that lifts your CTR is something only a real A/B test on your own channel can tell you. Use Thumbnail Tester to compare variants, then test the top two in YouTube Studio.
How do I know which generated variant will perform best?
You can't know before testing — but CTRpilot's free Thumbnail Tester lets you preview how each variant appears in YouTube's Home, Search, and Mobile contexts at actual display sizes. Use that to eliminate obvious losers, then A/B test your top 2 choices using YouTube Studio's built-in test feature.
What free tools does CTRpilot offer?
CTRpilot's free tools include: Thumbnail Tester (YouTube context preview), Thumbnail Checker (8-point audit), Thumbnail Rater (CTR score), Thumbnail Preview (display size preview), Thumbnail Resizer, Thumbnail Downloader, Title Generator, Tag Generator, and Revenue Calculator. All free, no account required.
Do the free tools upload my images to a server?
No. The thumbnail checker, rater, tester, and preview tools all run entirely in your browser. Your images are never sent to any server. Only the AI thumbnail generator (which creates images) communicates with our servers.
Is the Thumbnail Checker the same as the AI generator?
No — they do different things. The Thumbnail Checker audits a thumbnail you've already made, giving you specific feedback on 8 CTR factors (face crop, text legibility, contrast, etc). The AI generator creates new thumbnail variants from scratch based on your video title.
What happens when I run out of free credits?
You can buy a one-time pack for more credits. See available packs at /pricing. Credits never expire.
Is there a subscription?
No. CTRpilot is one-time packs only — pay once, use the credits whenever, nothing to cancel and nothing that renews automatically.
Do you offer refunds?
Yes — see our refund policy for the full details. In short: if it's your first pack and you've used fewer than 20 credits, you can get a full refund within 7 days of purchase.
Is my data private?
We don't sell your data or use your thumbnails to train anything. Your hook text and any images you upload are sent to fal.ai, the provider that runs the image model, because that is how generation works — that is the only third party that sees your content. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
